Islanders Push #9 TCU in Battled 3-1 Loss

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team took a set back from a nationally ranked TCU team Friday and nearly forced a decisive fifth but unfortunately fell in a tight four-setter (11-25, 14-25, 25-23, 23-25) on day two of the Rice Invitational.

The Islanders (4-7) came to life in the third set to take the closely contested frame 25-23 from TCU, the #9 ranked team in the nation. They started hot in the fourth with a 6-0 barrage in a last effort to force the fifth set, but it was ultimately the Horned Frogs that showed their power ranking and overcome the Islanders late for the match.

Today's offense was more spread for the Islanders, with four different players recording 5+ kills. Sophomore Hadley Burger came with heat for an errorless day, notching nine kills for a .310 hitting percentage. Senior Katelyn Krienke, senior Kaitlyn Baumann, and freshman Jaeda Rawls-Fletcher all tallied six kills in the match.

Sophomore Virginia Van Der Werff came away with the first double-double of her career, with a 26-assists, 12-dig day. She additionally added another pair of service aces to her league-leading season total.

Another defensive mark was redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Jaeger who recorded her fourth 20+ dig match of the season with 20 even. She now averages 4.33 digs/set which ranks fourth in the conference.

The Islanders will close out the weekend with their nonconference finale against Cornell tomorrow at 12 p.m.
