Career Highs Not Enough as Islanders Fall in Five to Sam Houston

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team couldn't contain Sam Houston in the latter sets Saturday night, falling in a late 3-2 heartbreaker on day three of the Islanders Classic, presented by Schlotzsky's.

The Islanders (3-5) saw a winning streak come to an end tonight as it marked their first loss in a regular season match on their home court since the 2023 season. It came after a dominant two sets put them up early before Sam Houston (6-4) found just enough firepower to steal the win in the 3-2 reversal.

A&M-Corpus Christi won the stat sheet, however, outhitting the Bearkats with a .299 mark and 69 kills compared to the visitors' .233 clip off 55 kills. The Islanders also picked up 66 digs, 14 more than their counterpart.

The loss didn't come without significant performances, as multiple Islanders came away with career performances. Leading the Islanders offensively for the second match in a row, freshman Logan Dyer followed up her 17-kill performance last night against Prairie View by coming out swinging to record her new career-high with 18 kills in tonight's match. Fellow freshman Tatum Mason also set her new career best with 13 kills, improving from her previous match of 11.

Another consistent figure in the lineup was redshirt sophomore Ally Saleh with career-highs of 15 kills and six digs. Redshirt sophomore Ella Busey and senior Katelyn Krienke also set career-highs on the defensive end, as Busey picked up 11 digs while Krienke notched 10.

While not her career-best, redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Jaeger did record her season high in the backrow with 23 digs tonight. It marks her third 20+ dig performance of the year and second in a row after notching 21 last night.

Another career mark was set by sophomore Virginia Van Der Werff, who dished out 53 assists in tonight's effort. It tops her previous best of 46 which she set in this season's opener against Fresno State.

The Islanders will look to regroup tomorrow, as they conclude their home tournament in a rematch against Prairie View at 3 p.m. back in the Dugan Wellness Cetner.
