CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ending their home tournament weekend on a high note, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team strung together three complete sets Sunday to take down Prairie View for the second time this weekend to conclude the Islanders Classic, presented by Schlotzsky's.
It marks the Islanders' (4-5) third sweep of the season and second this weekend alone after opening the tournament with a 3-0 win over Tarleton State. It is their second victory over the Panthers (2-8) this weekend as well after defeating them 3-2 this past Friday.
A&M-Corpus Christi hit for a .340 clip as a team, the third time this season hitting above .300 and second this weekend. Over the last two seasons, the Islanders are 12-0 when hitting above .300.
With 42 kills today, it marks A&M-Corpus Christi's first match this year recording over 40 kills in a three-set outing. They entered the tournament averaging 12.12 kills/set which ranked third in the Southland Conference and will improve that season mark after averaging 13.75 kills/set this weekend.
Freshman
Logan Dyer once again led the Islanders with 13 kills today, her first career 10+ kill performance in a three-set match. It was her third straight match hitting double digits, recording 54 total on the weekend.
Kaitlyn Baumann and
Tatum Mason were behind Dyer with nine and eight kills, respectively. It was the second time this weekend Baumann hit without error, this time posting the .643 hitting percentage.
At the conclusion of the match, Baumann and Mason were both named to the Islanders Classic All-Tournament team. Baumann recorded an individual clip of .460 over the four matches while knocking down 35 kills in addition to having 10 blocks. Mason tallied 36 kills over the weekend for a .395 hitting percentage.
Sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff ran the offense to a weekend average of a .310. She dished out 11.00 assists/set including 37 today.
The Islanders will now get back on the road for three matches, competing in the Rice Invitational next weekend. They will return home Sept. 24 when they begin conference play, hosting SFA that night in the Dugan Wellness Center.
