A&M-Corpus Christi Fends Off Prairie View in 3-2 Victory

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – After powering to a quick 2-0 start, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team had to fend off a settled-in Prairie View and took a 3-2 victory Friday night in the Dugan Wellness Center on day two of the Islanders Classic, presented by Schlotzsky's.

The Islanders (3-4) are now 2-0 in their home tournament after sweeping Tarleton State the night prior. Tonight saw them get hot quick for another two-set lead but this time, their opponent gave some fight back as Prairie View evened the match with wins in set three and four. A&M-Corpus Christi had to do it five but did so with a 15-5 finish to take the win.

It was the second time this season that the Islanders hit above .300 as a team, turning in a .361 clip. In the sets they won, they hit above .400 each time. A&M-Corpus Christi's 71 kills is a season-high, and the first time the program had 70+ kills in a match since they recorded 79 in the 2024 regular season finale against UIW.

Showing out tonight especially was freshman Logan Dyer who hit for her career-high 17 kills to lead the match. Joining her in double figures was senior Kaitlyn Baumann with 15 and fellow freshman Tatum Mason who notched 11, her first career 10+ kill performance.

An added weapon was A&M-Corpus Christi's pressure at the service line with 15 aces. It is the second match in a row that the Islanders had 10+ aces after recording 10 against Tarleton State last night.

Leading that was sophomore Virginia Van Der Werff who turned in her career high of six service aces. Simultaneously, redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Jaeger had herself a night with a career-high five aces while also turning in her season-high 21 digs.

The Islanders continue with their home tournament tomorrow night when they face Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. back in the Dugan Wellness Center. They will then close out the weekend with a rematch against this Prairie View squad Sunday at 3 p.m.
