Wilson Named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Closing out the regular season on a high note, junior Ashley Wilson of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team was named the final Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week of 2025, as announced by the league office on Sunday morning.

Wilson is the second Islander to win a weekly honor this year, joining sophomore Cilia Leal, who won Offensive Player of the Week back on August 26. The Houston native is the first member of the program to be named Defensive Player of the Week since Rachel Loetzer did so on August 27 of last year.

Wilson earned the nod thanks to a standout performance in the Islanders' regular season finale against Incarnate Word on Thursday, when she played all 90 minutes and helped them hold the Cardinals to just a lone goal in what ended up as a 2-1 victory that clinched their spot in the Southland Conference Soccer Championship this upcoming week. She also assisted on the game-winning goal in addition to this, making a run from the midfield line deep into UIW territory and finding freshman Emma Lucero, who banged the pass home from outside the box to increase the team's lead up to two just eight minutes into the evening. This assist was the ninth of Wilson's three-year career, breaking a tie with Maggie Murray, Molly Arens and teammate Morgan Westbury and making her the all-time leader in program history.

Wilson and the rest of the Islanders will now prepare for their run in the conference tournament, traveling to Beaumont and starting things off with a matchup against No. 2 Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT.
