Islanders Tennis Takes Momentous Fall into SLC Individual Championships

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams will gear up for the 2025 SLC Fall Individual Championships this weekend after a highlight filled fall season leading up to it.

Thursday will be the kickoff for the Islanders who are taking Josefa Fuenzalida (singles) and the paring of Yana Mykytyn and Kseniya Ramanouskaya (doubles) on the women's side, and Etienne Marty (singles) and Matthieu Coignet/Mikel Garmendia (doubles) on the men's side.

The women's doubles pair are going in as the No. 2 seed, starting Thursday at 11 a.m. against UTRGV's selected duo. The men are slated at the No. 3 seed and will face the third-seeded Lamar pairing Friday at 9 a.m.

Fuenzalida was seeded No. 4 in the singles bracket and will go against Yaiza Vazquez of UTRGV Thursday at 3 p.m. Marty was slated the No. 3 seed and will get going for the men on Friday at 1 p.m. against Lamar's Leon Nickel.

The champions of the 2025 Southland Individual Tennis Championships will qualify for the 2025 ITA Conference Masters Championship on Nov. 6-9. From this, four players will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists). Meanwhile, three doubles teams will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Conference Masters (champion, finalist, third place).

Last year, the Islanders swept the men's bracket with Nathan Favier winning the singles bracket and the pair of Tom Berry/Harry Fouzas completed a run in the doubles bracket as all three qualified for the 2024 ITA Conference Masters.

The Islanders will look to replicate more of that success, especially after huge performances in the fall season so far this year. Notably, the pairing of Coignet and Garmendia have already made a splash as they are coming off a semifinal finish at ITA Texas Regionals after defeating the nation's No. 1 doubles pair from Baylor. They also defeated the doubles pair from #8 Texas A&M and #9 TCU during their run.

It is the toughest regional in the nation, with Coignet/Garmendia reaching the final four out of every Division I program in Texas. Also at regionals, Coignet reached the round of 32 in singles play after defeating Texas A&M's Ethan Silva.

On the women's side, Mykytyn and Ramanouskaya reached the round of 32 in doubles play at Texas Regionals. Ramanouskaya also made it to the round of 16 in singles play.
