CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In front of a record attendance of 1,335 fans, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team drove past Northwestern State in sweeping fashion with the 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-18) match Saturday in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (6-10, 2-2 SLC) edged out a tight first set for the early lead and settled in with their noticeable home court advantage, taking the next two from Northwestern State (1-17, 0-4 SLC) with slighter ease. The second set alone saw A&M-Corpus Christi hit .536 as a team with 17 kills.
Three Islanders came away with double figure kills, with junior
Kenna Buchanan and freshman
Tatum Mason matching each other with 12 kills each. They also both hit above .500 with Buchanan coming away at a .579 clip.
Mason is the most efficient hitter for the Islanders, and ranks fifth in the league during conference play at a .381 average. Krienke and senior
Kaitlyn Baumann also grace that top-10 list.
Freshman
Logan Dyer tallied 11 kills and senior
Katelyn Krienke neared that mark at eight kills but fired for a .400 efficiency.
Running the efficient offense was sophomore
Virginia Van Der Werff with 39 assists and neared a double-double with seven digs. A top-three server in the league, Van Der Werff also added two aces to her season-total of 31 now.
Topping the charts in conference play is redshirt sophomore Brookyln Jaeger who once again picked up at least 20 digs with 22 today in just three sets. She is averaging 5.36 digs/set in league play, the best mark among all defenders in the SLC.
It is her third 20-dig performance in the last five matches and seventh on the year. It was her second time reaching that mark in a three-set match this season.
The Islanders will hit the road next week to face HCU Thursday before traveling West to San Antonio for a Saturday matchup at UIW. They will return home Oct. 16 against New Orleans.
