Hammond, Louisiana -
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team drops the first two games of the final road trip of the season against Southeastern Louisiana University at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The doubleheader was scheduled in preparation for the weather coming into the area over the weekend.
Coming into the day, the Islanders and Lions both had much to play for as either team still have the chance to be left out of the Southland Conference baseball tournament pending the weekend results. SLU sits at (28-25 overall,10-13 SLC) while the Islanders are now (21-33 overall, 9-14 SLC) with Friday's 2 p.m. regular season finale shaping up to be critical for both.
Game 1: Three doubles, 12 hits, and four runs scored by the Texas A&M- Corpus Christi offense proved to not be enough as three home runs and 16 hits from the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana overpowered.
Issac Webb continued his hot spring pushing his batting average to .344 with two hits and an RBI single in the third inning. This was his 22nd multi-hit game on the year. Two other Islanders also had multi-hit games in Chance Reisdorph and Cole Modgling who gave Texas A&M- Corpus Christi their final lead 4-3 in the 5th inning.
The three Lion home runs in between the 5th and 7th innings retook and stretched out the lead for Southeastern resulting in their 12-4 victory.
Game 2: The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the first inning and never gave up the lead throughout. The Islanders did battle back on multiple occasions thanks to hitting three home runs including one by red-shirt junior Issac Webb who now has four on the season and two from Junior Logan Vaughan putting him at five total. Senior Sebastian Trinidad led A&M-Corpus Christi with three runs batted in giving him 37 for the season.
The Islander's offense, similar to game one, led in the top of the first inning, this time by was of the sacrifice fly from Sebastian Trinidad, who had three RBIs on the night, good for 37 for the year.
The Lions had a 4-1 advantage when Issac Webb now with a team leading .345 batting average crushed a home run to left field to make it 4-2.
Logan Vaughan also joined in on the home run party with two of his own, both solo shots including one to bring the game to within one run 9-8 in the top of the ninth.
Zach Garcia (4-2) took the loss in this one, pitching six innings and striking out three batters.
On Deck: The regular season finale is slated to start at an updated time of 2 p.m. Friday afternoon May 17th. The Islanders must take care of business to position themselves in the best way possible to clinch a berth into the Southland Conference Tournament. It is quite possible it will come down to the end of the day to decide that eighth and final spot while fellow Southland members finish up the weekend series.
