Hammond, Louisiana -
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team defeated the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions in the last regular season game of the year at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. With the win, Islanders Baseball will now play in the North Oaks Health System Southland Baseball Tournament starting Wednesday right back in Hammond, Louisiana on the campus of SLU.
The Islanders got off to a dynamite start plating five runs on six hits in the first inning. To sum up the flurry of runs Sophomore Christian Smith-Johnson hit his 7th home run of the year to give the Islanders the 5-0 lead. He ended up going 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the team.
In the second inning, the Islanders increased their lead to 7-0 by a two-run double from Junior Chance Reisdorph.
By the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions clawed back to tie the ball game at 7-7. In the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded Cole Modgling gave the lead back to Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a sacrifice fly for his 20th RBI of the year.
The theatrics in this matchup were not done as SLC came right back in the bottom of the inning and hit a solo home run by Rhett Rosevear to make it 8-8.
A&M Corpus Christi, needing a clutch hit to keep their postseason hopes alive, received one in the top of the ninth by way of Junior Josh Blount who hit an RBI single to bring home the go ahead run and give the Islanders the lead for good at 9-8.
On the mound Matthew Watson (3-4) earned the win as he closed out the Lions for the last four outs of the game. Senior Maddox Thornton threw 4.1 innings of relief and only gave a run while facing 19 batters.
