Islanders Stay Undefeated at Home with 3-1 Win over Texas A&M-Commerce

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team improved to 5-0 on its home court this year, topping Texas A&M-Commerce in a 3-1 decision (25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22) Thursday night in the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders (8-8, 3-2 SLC) won their fourth straight match and third in league play after defeating the Lions (6-12, 3-3 SLC) in four. While A&M-Commerce produced higher offensive numbers, the Islanders' success was paced by their defense, out digging the Lions 59-48.

The defense was picked up by senior Kyndal Payne who spearheaded the backrow with 14 digs to still be a huge component in the win despite just turning in seven kills in her offensive effort. She is on a seven-match streak of recording 10+ digs.

After a swap at libero, senior Kayla White stepped up to finish with 13 digs on the night. It is her 10th double figure dig performance of the year and second in conference play.

It is A&M-Corpus Christi's sixth opponent to be held under a .200 hitting mark this year.

Offensively, A&M-Corpus Christi found their highest efficiency out of the middle, with senior Leah Stolfus and junior Kaitlyn Baumann both turning in double figure kills tonight. Stolfus led the team with 12 for a .308 hitting clip while Baumann was right behind her with 11 but led the team with a .474 mark.

Senior Tori Arrington neared double digits with nine kills on the night and made up for it with three solo blocks which led the match. The Islanders improve to 8-1 when hitting above .200 as a team, turning in a .242 tonight.

The Islanders will look to keep up their success at home and wrap the weekend Saturday at 1 p.m. against Northwestern State. After tonight's results, the Islanders are tied for third in the conference standings with Saturday's matchup ending a three-match week.
