Payne Reaches 500-Kill Milestone in Loss to SLU

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Sophomore Kyndal Payne added 16 kills to her career total, recording 514 and surpassing the 500-kill milestone after the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team dropped 3-0 (26-24, 26-24 and 25-18) to Southeastern Louisiana Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center.

Payne led the match in kills for a .375 mark, with the Islanders (1-15) turning in 45 as a team compared to Southeastern's (12-3) 43. Senior Carissa Barnes was also a match-leader, picking up 19 digs to bring her to a 6.83 average in conference play. Payne has now turned in double-digit kills in both conference matches, while Barnes continues to lead the Southland with a 5.05 overall digs per set average.

"Kyndal really showcased her all-around game. She is a leader and an amazing teammate," said head coach Steve Greene. "Carissa was outstanding on defense and really showed the effort it takes to be an outstanding player. They both showed their desire to win and the confidence they have in their own abilities. They are great examples of what we want from our team."

Set one never had a lead greater than three points, as both teams went back-and-fourth from start to finish. Junior McKenna Reiswig, who earned 11 kills in the match, got a pair of kills early in the first to make it 4-all, one of 11 ties in the set. Another tie came at the 18-all mark after a block by Payne and freshman Tayah Little. The last tie came at 24-all after a kill by Reiswig kept the set alive for the Islanders before the Lady Lions earned back-to-back kills to close out set one in extra points.

The second set featured the Islanders going on a six point run to lead 6-2 early with Barnes at the service line. A&M-Corpus Christi maintained its lead through 16-14, before a pair of errors tied the set at 16-all. The Islanders were able to jump back out to a lead off a trio of kills by Payne and even reached set point at 24-21 before Southeastern fought back with a 5-point spurt for another extra-point 26-24 set win.

Other than an early 1-1 tie in the third, the Lady Lions took over and led for the remainder of the set. Southeastern got up to a 22-13 lead and despite the Islanders challenging the deficit with a kill by Payne and a service ace by freshman Halle Gibson, the Lady Lions finished out the match with the deciding 25-18 set win.

This was only the third time Southeastern has topped A&M-Corpus Christi, with the Islanders still leading the all-time record now 17-3.

The Islanders will remain home for their third straight conference match, hosting Lamar (6-7) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
