The winningest coach in program history, Steve Greene was hired on Feb. 4, 2016, as the fourth head coach of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball program which he has taken to new heights every year, now entering his 10th season at the helm ahead of 2025.
Greene secured his 126th win on Oct. 14, 2023, against Nicholls to solidify his name as the program’s most winning coach in his seven plus years at the helm. The achievement came after he had already reached the most conference wins in school history with 81 in 2021. He now posts a 155-111 overall mark, 109-33 in conference and 14-5 in the conference tournament.
His record has been padded by six championships, including a recent 2024 campaign that saw the Islanders return to the top of the Southland Conference tournament and punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Greene also coached A&M-Corpus Christi to the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back season in 2020 and 2021, the latter additionally seeing a regular season title, as well as his first season in 2016. The 2021 championship match over McNeese marked his 100th career win.
Also during his time on the Island, Greene has coached 88 SLC All-Conference selections including four Player of the Years, seven Setter of the Years, four Libero of the Years, a Freshman of the Year, and a Newcomer of the Year. Additionally, he has developed three AVCA All-Americans in consecutive seasons with Faith Panhans (2021) and Kyndal Payne (2022 & 2023).
In 2021, Greene led the Islanders to a 13-1 SLC record to enter the NCAA Tournament having gone over a month since their previous loss. In 2020, the program advanced to the NCAA Tournament after knocking off the No. 1 and 2 seeds in the SLC Tournament to earn the automatic bid. Between both seasons, the Islanders had nine SLC All-Conference honorees, eight SLC All-Academic honorees, six SLC All-Tournament selections, and four AVCA All-Region Honorable Mentions.
Greene's offense in the 2020 season had A&M-Corpus Christi ranked top-five nationally in kills per set, while the team also led the conference in kills (14.41 k/s), hitting percentage (.280) and assists (13.03 a/s).
Greene was named the SLC Coach of the Year in his first season in 2016 after winning both the SLC regular season and tournament championships. He led the Islanders to an undefeated 16-0 SLC campaign and finished it off by winning their second-straight SLC Tournament and clinching a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Following the season, outside hitter Brittany Gilpin was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year as well as the Student-Athlete of the Year.
Known for his work with setters, Greene guided Kristyn Nicholson to the top of the Islanders' record book for career assists in his first two seasons. A three-time Southland Setter of the Year, Nicholson was also invited to train in the USA Collegiate National Team program as a senior.
The program also saw it's first CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree in Madison Green under Greene's guidance. Green earned second team honors in 2018 and was a first team honoree during her senior season. She was a two-time First-Team All-Southland performer and was the Southland Setter of the Year in 2019, earning AVCA All-Region honors.
Greene came to The Island from Texas A&M, where he was an assistant coach for five seasons. With the Aggies, he primarily worked with the setters and served as the program's recruiting coordinator. In each of his last four seasons, Texas A&M had a setter earn AVCA All-America honorable mention honors, and in his final season Greene mentored Stephanie Aiple to SEC Player of the Year accolades.
In 2014, Greene's recruiting class was ranked as the 17th best in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. With Greene on staff, the Aggies advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year and surpassed the 20-win plateau four times.
Before his time in College Station, Greene spent two years as an assistant coach at both Houston Baptist and Cal State Monterey Bay.
Greene also has prior head coaching experience. He started the volleyball program and served as head coach at Saint Francis High School in Watsonville, Calif., before moving on to become the head coach at Notre Dame High School in Salinas, Calif. for three seasons.
A former player himself, Greene was the setter and team captain at Irvine Valley College from 1997-98 and 1999-2000. He earned a degree in Kinesiology from CSU Monterey Bay.
