CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coming off a two-championship season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball program will put itself to the test after releasing its 2022 schedule, announced by head coach
Steve Greene.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will travel for non-conference tournaments at Nebraska, Rice and Arizona, and will host the Islanders Classic on Sept. 2-3. The Southland Conference will play an 18-game double round robin slate.
Â
"We are looking forward to a very challenging schedule this year. Our team has had tremendous success the last couple seasons with back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament and we want to build on that success. We had an amazing class of six graduates that provided so much to our team on and off the floor. I can't thank
Julia Carter Sam Dumity,
Angel Felan,
Kylie Filipiak,
Montez Uigaese and
Rachel Young enough for all that they have done and still do for our program," Greene said.
Â
The season begins Aug. 26 with a trip to Nebraska to play the Cornhuskers, Pepperdine and Rice. The Islanders will face Texas Tech, Rice and Brown in Houston before heading to Tucson, Arizona to play Arizona, Cal State Northridge and UTEP.
Â
"For this young and talented team, opening at Nebraska will be a challenging test as they are one of the best teams in the country year in and year out. They have a top-notch program and facility that really showcases women's volleyball to their fans. Our other two preseason trips will be at two other perennial top programs at Arizona and Rice. I have utmost respect for what Coach Rubio and Coach Volpe have done with their respective programs and we know these will provide opportunities for us to be challenged and improve on our weaknesses," Greene said.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will host the Islanders Classic on Sept. 2-3, which will also be the home opener. The islanders will square off against SMU, Sam Houston and Indiana.
"Our home tournament over Labor Day Weekend will showcase will be the first chance to come out and see your 2022 Islanders in the Dugan Wellness Center. Sam Houston, SMU, and Indiana will all be here to compete in front of the Deep End and all our fans and supporters here in Corpus Christi," Greene said.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi will also play a pair of non-conference matches against UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. The Islanders will head to Edinburg, Texas on Aug. 30 and will host the Vaqueros on Sept. 6.
"The South Texas Showdown with UTRGV is always a great fan experience and match to watch as we have a close rivalry each season," Greene said.
Â
Conference play begins Sept. 22 when A&M-Corpus Christi hosts New Orleans. The 2022 Southland Conference Championship is scheduled for Nov. 17-20, hosted by Southeastern.
"We look forward to using this difficult preseason schedule to improve, build our team chemistry, and really focus on our strengths as we look forward to the Southland Conference schedule and Southland Conference Tournament," Greene said.
