CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In an action packed Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program defeated New Orleans 6-1, but the men dropped a 4-3 nail-biter.
The women (17-3, 3-1 SLC) won their 22nd consecutive match at home and 10th out of of their last 11 overall. They improved to 8-2 all-time against New Orleans (8-8, 1-2 SLC).
"We are coming together as a team, getting healthy and getting tougher. We made some not so good choices, but we didn't stay down. We made the choice to get up and fight rather than make excused and I'm proud of them for that. We have to keep choosing the character road of accountability, fighting hard for our brother and sister and bringing great energy every point. We cannot choose the road of softness and excuses. This team has great character. We just have to keep making good choices," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The women, who are ranked No. 81 in the nation in the ITA Rankings out of 311 Division I, programs got off to a quick start by winning the doubles point. Juniors
Camille Townsend and
Mariya Shumeika started it with a 6-2 win at No. 2, and sophomores
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore clinched it 7-5 at No. 1.
In singles, A&M-Corpus Christi won four matches in straight sets. At the top, Aucagne ousted Ank Vullings 6-4, 6-1. On court three, Townsend also turned in a 2-0 day with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Sophomore
Victoire Delattre notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5, while sophomore
Kateryna Rublevska won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6. Sophomore
Leopoldine Boisseau finished it off with a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-2, 10-1 win as she was dominant in the third set super tiebreaker.
The men (12-9, 0-1 SLC) tried to rally after dropping the doubles point. They won the first set on four courts but the Privateers (13-5, 2-0 SLC) were able to hold off a comeback attempt.
Junior
Matthieu Peres put the Islanders on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. A&M-Corpus Christi scored its second point on court six with a 7-6, 6-1 victory from junior
Ulysse Bertrand.
On court one, sophomore
Pascal Lorieul grinded out a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 win. The Islanders needed one more victory, but UNO was able to snag three-set wins on courts four and five to seal it.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 10-1 all-time against UNO. It was the program's first SLC loss at home since 2012.
The Islanders will host Nicholls on Sunday with the women starting at 11 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. men's match. A&M-Corpus Christi will honor four seniors between the two matches. It includes
