CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In the final home matches of the season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs both notched 7-0 sweeps on Sunday over Nicholls on Senior Day at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Between the singles and doubles of each match, the A&M-Corpus Christi held special Senior Day ceremonies for its student-athletes.
Jordan Ortega-Mendez,
Mariya Shumeika and
Camille Townsend were honored from the women, and
Kyohei Yamanaka from the men.
All four have been a part of SLC Championship teams including last year where both the men and women advanced to the NCAA Tournament. A&M-Corpus Christi was one of only 39 Universities in American with both the men's and women's tennis programs at the NCAA Tournament.
"We are just incredibly proud of these for seniors! What Kyohei, Cami, Mariya and Jordan have done over the past four years is amazing - 3.9 GPA's, three NCAA tournaments, five Southland Championships and both teams ranked top-75 nationally! They did special things for this University, but what I'm most impressed with is their character, work ethic and commitment to team above self. Islanders Tennis is certainly not for everyone. We run the team with a concept called "real world training" designed to help students soar in the real world. And I can promise you this – these four seniors will soar in the real world with their friendships, families, and in the job world," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The women (18-3, 4-1 SLC) extended their home winning-streak to 23 matches, which will carry-over into next season. The Islanders entered the weekend ranked No. 81 in the nation in the ITA Rankings out of 311 Division I programs.
A&M-Corpus Christi won the doubles with victories on courts one and three.
Leopoldine Boisseau and
Kateryna Rublevska posted a 6-1 win on court three, and
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore clinched it with a victory on court one.
The Islanders did not drop a set in singles. At the top, Aucagne put-away Simona Maksimovic 7-5, 6-2 and Shumeika won 6-1, 6-4 on court two.
In the middle of the lineup, Townsend tallied a 6-2, 6-4 victory and Boisseau won 6-1, 6-1.
Victoire Delattre shined in a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 and Rublevska rounded it out with a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
The men (13-9, 1-1 SLC) earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and two.
Ryuya Ata and
Ulysse Bertrand started it off with a 6-2 victory at No. 2, and
Pascal Lorieul and
Nathan Schwartz battled for a 7-5 win at No. 1.
In singles, Lorieul and Schwartz turned in more wins on the first two courts. Lorieul submitted a 6-3, 6-2 result and Schwartz 6-3, 6-0.
Also with straight-set wins were Bertrand and
Borja Delgado. Bertrand cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory on court five, and Delgado followed with a 6-4, 6-1 final on court six.
The closest matches came on courts three and four where A&M-Corpus Christi clawed back from first-set deficits.
