A&M-Corpus Christi Falls Short at UTA to Split Season Series

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program attempted to rally in singles but the comeback attempt was halted by UT Arlington in a 4-2 decision at the UTA Tennis Courts.

After dropping the doubles point, A&M-Corpus Christi (10-6) won the first set on four of six singles courts. However, UT Arlington (8-3) was able to do just enough to force three-setters and hang on.

The Islanders continued to play shorthanded without senior Kyohei Yamanaka and sophomore Ryuya Ata who played No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, last season. Both were out due to injuries.

A 2-0 day came from junior Ulysse Bertrand. He teamed with junior Matthieu Peres in doubles to register a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 court.

In singles, Bertrand cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot.

A&M-Corpus Christi's other singles win came from sophomore Nathan Schwartz on court three. He closed out a straight-set win 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Guillermo Castaneda was winning on court four when play was halted. He led 4-2 in the third set. Though, the Mavs were able to grab three-setters on courts one and five to clinch the match.

A&M-Corpus Christi is now 11-5 all-time against UT Arlington.

The Islanders will continue their three-match road swing Sunday when they travel to Rice for a 12 p.m. match at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
