CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Continuing to defend their home court, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's & women's tennis programs both defeated NJIT 6-1 on Tuesday in Southland Conference matches at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The women improved to 15-2 (2-0 SLC) and extended their home winning-streak to 21 matches. They have not lost a conference home match since 2014-15.
The men are now 12-7 on the year, 1-0 in conference and 6-2 at home.
Both the men and women are reigning SLC Tournament champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
"This was one of the most focused matches we played all year. We are growing and developing each week and I love the character and heart of our team. They are getting closer and closer to playing every present point with intensity. The loose, unfocused giveaways are disappearing and there's a commitment to making our opponent earn every point. This team is a family and they fought for each other today. We're very proud of them," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The men grinded out a hard-earned doubles point. After sophomores
Guillermo Castaneda and
Borja Delgado won 6-1 at court three, it came down to court two where the Islanders trailed 6-5. Juniors
Matthieu Peres and
Ulysse Bertrand battled for a 7-6 (4) win.
In singles, Castaneda, Delgado, Peres and Bertrand all turned in 2-0 days with straight set victories. Peres won 6-2, 6-4 at court two and Castaneda 6-3, 6-0 at court four. Delgado cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at court five and Bertrand 6-2, 6-2 at six.
Reigning SLC Player of the Week winner
Nathan Schwartz registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory at court three.
It was a similar story on the women's side. Doubles came down to court three after sophomores
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore notched a 6-1 win at court two. In the deciding match, sophomores
Leopoldine Boisseau and
Kateryna Rublevska closed out a 6-4 victory.
A&M-Corpus Christi won the first three completed singles matches to quickly clinch the match. Aucagne won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 and junior
Mariya Shumeika 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. Boisseau capped it off with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
The teams played out the rest of the matches and the Islanders won a pair of three-setters. Honore came back to win 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2 at No. 4, while Rublevska pulled out a super tiebreaker in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 decision.
