Tennis Extends Home Winning-Streaks with Men’s Victory over UTA, Women over TAMUK

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs excelled Tuesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center as the men defeated UT Arlington 6-1 and the women swept Texas A&M-Kingsville 7-0.

With the victories, the women (7-1) extended their home winning-streak to 18 matches, while the men (6-2) increased theirs to six.

The women did not drop a set on any court.

"We are incredibly proud of our Islanders tennis teams today! I thought they all fought so hard and cheered for each other like a big family! The most difficult, challenging thing to do in college tennis is get all six players to fight really hard, and today that happened! It doesn't happen always and as long as you're part of the human club it's a challenge! But today I thought every Islander at every position fought with all their hearts, and we're incredibly proud of them for that," said head coach Steve Moore.

The men got it started by winning the doubles point. Sophomores Nathan Schwartz and Pascal Lorieul won 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and fellow sophomores Ryuya Ata and Borja Delgado posted the same score to win at No. 2.

Delgado followed it up with a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles to make it 2-0 Islanders. On the court next to him, sophomore Guillermo Castaneda turned in a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Schwartz was also a straight-set winner 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.

With the match already won 4-0, the teams played it out and the Islanders won a pair of third set super tiebreakers. Peres came back to win 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 1, and Lorieul also responded from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6, 10-6 at No. 3.

The men improved to 11-4 all-time against UT Arlington and 7-1 at home. The two used to be Southland Conference rivals before the Mavs left the league at the end of the 2012 season.

The women followed suit by winning every singles and doubles court. They won the doubles point as juniors Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend were flawless in a 6-0 victory at the top court for a quick start. Sophomores Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore won 6-3 at No. 2, and sophomores Leopoldine Boisseau and Kateryna Rublevska won 6-2 at No. 3.

In singles, sophomore Victoire Delattre got it started with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6, and soon after, Boisseau closed out a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5. Honore clinched the match 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.

At the top spot, Aucagne shined in a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Maya Donkor. Townsend registered a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 and Shumeika tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 to end the day.

The Islanders are now 5-0 all-time against the Javelinas with three consecutive 7-0 sweeps.

Up next, the women will put their three-match winning-streak on the line Thursday when they travel to Rice for a 1 p.m. match. A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off previous 6-1 victories over UTSA and UTRGV.
