HOUSTON – In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program dropped a 7-0 decision to Rice on Thursday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Owls (3-1) were able to squeak out a trio of three-setters over the Islanders (7-2) in a series of highly contested singles matches.
A very close one came at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, junior
Camille Townsend responded with a dominant 6-1 second-set win. In the third set super tiebreaker, Townsend led 9-5 when Anastasia Smirnova saved four match points to barely win a 12-10 nailbiter.
On court two, junior
Mariya Shumeika nearly pulled out a comeback as well. She fell behind 6-0 win she answered with a 6-1 win in the second set. Though in the third, she was edged 6-4.
Sophomore
Leopoldine Boisseau found herself in a back-and-forth battle at No. 5 singles. She trailed 6-3 when she won the second 6-4 but was topped 6-1 in the third.
Both the A&M-Corpus Christi men and women will be in action Friday when they travel to St. Thomas for 11 a.m. matches.
