HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program fell behind early and couldn't catch up to UL-Lafayette in a 4-1 decision Saturday on a neutral court at Rice University.
UL-Lafayette (4-1) grabbed the doubles point and was up a set on four singles courts when A&M-Corpus Christi (5-2) attempted to claw back. Though, the Ragin' Cajuns were able to thwart off a comeback attempt.
"I give a lot of credit to Louisiana-Lafayette today. They showed up and really got on top of us early. Their energy was just better than ours at the beginning. Our guys showed great heart and fight back, but we had dug a hole for ourselves and UL-Lafayette's too good of a team to dig a hole against and win. I think our team knows we've got to bring more fire and energy with our foot work from the very first point! But I believe in our guys - they've got great character and I know they're committed to do that! We will get a lot better and keep grinding, and I think everyone on this team knows that," said head coach
Steve Moore.
A&M-Corpus Christi picked up a win at No. 2 singles as junior Mattieu Peres registered a 7-5, 7-5 victory. Sophomore
Nathan Schwartz was in a battle at No. 4 singles and came back to force a three-setter, which was tied 2-2 when the match went unfinished.
In doubles, the Islanders were leading 4-2 at the No. 3 position with sophomores
Ryuya Ata and
Borja Delgado when the Cajuns clinched the point.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 11-9 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Islanders will be back at home Tuesday in a match moved up to 11 a.m. against UT Arlington. The A&M-Corpus Christi women will also host a match Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in a rescheduled contest against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
