Tennis Completes Season Sweeps over UTRGV in South Texas Showdown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Winning the South Texas Showdown matches, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs defeated UTRGV 7-0 on the men's side and 5-2 on the women's at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on Tuesday, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
 
The women (10-2) extended their home winning-streak to 19 matches and the men (9-3) seven.
 
The South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, is an annual rivalry series in which A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV compete against each other in 12 sports. The Islanders lead the all-time series 4-1. This year, A&M-Corpus Christi is ahead 35-10 with each win counting as three points and one point being awarded for attendance for men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and baseball.
 
"We are really proud of the way our teams played today. It was the toughest and most focused match our women have played all year. They are really growing and learning to play every point with intensity, not four out of five – and their commitment to fitness is very strong. I thought our guys came out with incredible energy in doubles. I love the passion and energy they brought. I think these teams know that our time of the year – the hot, windy, fitness, mental toughness part is ahead of us, and that makes our team really excited," said head coach Steve Moore.
 
The women kicked it off by winning all three doubles courts. It included a 6-1 win at the top spot from juniors Camille Townsend and Mariya Shumeika.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi kept it going in singles which included several dominating performances. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Emma Aucagne topped Lea Karren 6-3, 6-0. At the No. 3 position, Townsend was nearly flawless after posting a double-bagel 6-0, 6-0 over Barbara Martinez.
 
Another 6-0 set came at No. 6 where sophomore Victoire Delattre topped Ana Platisa 6-0, 6-2. Shumeika, sophomore Emma Honore and sophomore Leopoldine Boisseau also tallied straight-set victories.
 
In the afternoon match, the men grabbed the doubles points with wins on courts one and two. Sophomores Nathan Schwartz and Pascal Lorieul made quick work at the top spot 6-0, and sophomores Ryuya Ata and Borja Delgado clinched it 6-3 at No. 2.
 
The Islanders went up 2-0 after Delgado registered a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. A&M-Corpus Christi clinched the match after Lorieul and sophomore Guillermo Castaneda won 6-3, 6-3 apiece at No. 3 and 5 singles, respectively.
 
Rounding it out was Schwartz who completed a 2-0 day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Te Kani Williams at No. 4 singles.
 
Up next, the men will host the H-E-B Tournament of Champions over the weekend. The Islanders will face DePaul in the first round at 9 a.m. Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
