CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Picking up where they left off last season, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs tallied a pair of wins each against Prairie View A&M on Wednesday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The men (2-0) posted a pair of 7-0 sweeps, while the women (2-0) won 6-1 and 7-0. Every student-athlete on the Islanders roster won at least one singles match.
"This team worked so hard in the fall and was so excited for the season to start today. Overall, we fought very hard and showed good heart and character. Some players 'over tried' a bit but that just comes from caring a lot. I think we committed hart to fundamentals and controlling what we can control. I love the way we cheer and support each other. This team is really fun to coach. Prairie View is very much improved and competed very hard. We had some good battles today and learned a lot," said head coach
Steve Moore.
On the men's side, the team went 6-0 in doubles and 12-0 in singles overall. The most competitive match of the day was at No. 1 singles where junior
Matthieu Peres came back to defeat Jorge Cabellero 4-6, 6-4, 10-1. The two then rematched in the second of the doubleheader and Peres was up 3-1 when Cabellero retired.
For the women, sophomore
Leopoldine Boisseau submitted a 4-0 day after winning two singles and two doubles matches. The final match of the afternoon saw junior
Mariya Shumeika come from behind to oust Gabrielle Leslie 6-7 (4), 6-0, 10-4.
The men improved to 34-0 all-time against the Panthers, while the women are now 31-0.
Up next, A&M-Corpus Christi will head to PVAMU for rematches at 12 p.m. Tuesday.
