CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball held the Lady Lions to a .130 attack percentage as the Islanders cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Southeastern Thursday night inside the Dugan Wellness Center.
Kyndal Payne paced the Islanders attack with 12 kills while
Rachel Young and
Montez Uigaese flirted with a double-digit total with nine and eight, respectively. Leading the nation in digs per set,
Carissa Barnes added a 20-dig performance while
Faith Panhans chipped in 33 assists.
With the win, A&M-Corpus Christi moved to a 15-3 all-time record against the Lady Lions.
An Islander seven-point stretch bookended by Young kills turned a 2-1 Lady Lion lead into an 8-2 A&M-Corpus Christi advantage that the home club would not relinquish. Another run built the lead to 10, a margin the Islanders maintained until back-to-back Payne kills closed out the first set win, 25-13.
After the Lady Lions established an early 3-0 lead, the Islanders flipped the script yet again with a 10-point explosion that included five Southeastern miscues for the 10-3 cushion. Southeastern battled back down the stretch, erasing the deficit to one, 23-22, before a service error and Payne ace sealed the set and 2-0 match lead.
Both sides kept it close in the third, seeing five ties before the Islanders broke away with seven of the next nine points to claim a 19-13 advantage. Southeastern battled back once again but a pair of costly service errors completed the Islanders second-straight Southland sweep.
The Islanders remain at home for a matchup with Northwestern State Saturday at 1 p.m., with the match being broadcast on ESPN+.
