CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball rode another strong defensive effort en route to a 3-0 sweep over Northwestern State Saturday afternoon inside the Dugan Wellness Center.
The duo of
Kyndal Payne and
Montez Uigaese paced the Islanders attack with 11 kills apiece, while national leader in digs per set
Carissa Barnes helped hold the Lady Demons to a -.019 attack percentage with 27 digs.
Faith Panhans neared a double-double with six kills and 33 assists.
A&M-Corpus Christi registered its third-consecutive victory against the Lady Demons dating back to 2019.
The Lady Demons used a four-point run to establish a 7-3 lead, but the Islanders turned the tide with its own six-point outburst to claim the 9-7 advantage. Northwestern State battled down the stretch, bringing it within one on a pair of Islanders errors before an A&M-Corpus Christi run and Payne kill closed out the first-set win for the home club.
Both sides kept it close in the second, seeing five ties before kills from
Julia Carter and
Rachel Young pushed the Islanders to an 8-5 lead, one they would not relinquish. The Islanders took six of the next eight points while a four-point stretch consisting of three Lady Demon errors and a Panhans kill sealed the 2-0 match lead.
The third set followed a similar script, with the Islanders breaking away on a six-point run to seize a 16-7 cushion that the home club rode to the eventual 25-13 set win and third-straight Southland sweep.
The Islanders take a road trip to Louisiana where they'll face Nicholls on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
