SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball cruised to a 3-0 sweep over UIW to kick off the conference portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon inside the McDermott Center.
It was the 13th consecutive win for A&M-Corpus Christi (5-7, 1-0 SLC) over UIW (5-10, 0-1 SLC).
Kyndal Payne paced the Islanders attack with eight kills while
Faith Panhans added seven kills and 29 assists.
Carissa Barnes dug up 16 balls defensively.
After UIW took a 14-9 lead to open the first, the Islander mounted a comeback and claimed seven of the next nine points for a 16-16 tie on a
Ece Emrullah kill. Both sides kept it close until A&M-Corpus Christi broke away on a four-point run and a
Julia Carter kill closed out the 25-23 win.
Islanders rolled in the second, using an 8-1 outburst to establish a big 17-8 advantage. Another four-point run and a 0.517 team hitting percentage cemented a dominant 25-13 win and 2-0 match lead.
The match proved to be a nip-and-tuck affair at the start of the third, but the Islanders managed to gain separation on a six-point run that saw four UIW attack errors. UIW countered with its own four-point stretch to trim the deficit to one but would get no closer the rest of the way. The Islanders broke out the broom with another run while a UIW service error closed out the sweep.
A&M-Corpus Christi hosts Southeastern in a Southland battle Thursday, September 30 at 6:30 p.m. inside Dugan Wellness Center. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
