CORPUS Christi, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to Tarleton State to close out the Islanders Classic Saturday afternoon inside the Dugan Wellness Center.
Three Islanders –
Kyndal Payne (15),
Rachel Young (14) and
Montez Uigaese (10) – each ended the match with double-figure kills while
Carissa Barnes collected a season-high 39 digs.
Both sides battled from the onset, seeing four ties in the early stages before a Texan kill put the visitors ahead for good. The Islanders attempted to close the gap on multiple occasions, as back-to-back Young kills put the Texans on their heels in a 21-18 contest and forced a timeout. A quick 3-0 Tarleton spurt helped seal the 25-19 decision and 1-0 match lead.
The Islanders provided a bit of comeback magic in the second, as the home club trailed by as many as six points before a Payne kill kickstarted a momentum-shifting five-point run followed by a Tarleton attack error to turn a 15-9 deficit into a 16-16 tie. With four level scores down the stretch, A&M-Corpus Christi capitalized on a three-point run to eventually claim the 25-22 win and even the match.
The remaining sets followed a similar pattern, as Tarleton pulled away in the latter stages for a consecutive pair of 25-20 set wins to close out the Islanders Classic.
Standout freshman outside hitter Payne and junior libero Barnes claimed spots on the All-Tournament team.
The Islanders commence its Southland slate with a battle with UIW on Saturday, September 25 at 3 p.m.
