TEMPE, Ariz. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball commences it's 2021 season with a three-match slate at the Arizona State Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Islanders begin with two matches on Friday against host Arizona State (2 p.m.) and Louisville (7 p.m.) before concluding with another neutral site matchup versus Cal Poly (2 p.m.).
Notes
- The defending tournament champion Islanders received 13 of the 16 first-place votes for the preseason favorite distinction in the Southland poll.
- A&M-Corpus Christi placed five on the All-Southland preseason teams, with Rachel Young, Carissa Barnes and Faith Panhans being named first team while Kylie Filipiak and Montez Uigaese received second team recognition.
- The Islanders' roster features a strong newcomer class consisting of seven freshmen looking to make an impact on the court.
- Barnes and Panhans look to surpass career milestones, as Barnes needs 37 digs to reach 1,000 in her career while Panhans also aims for lucky number 37 to signal 1,000 career assists.
- Last season, Young broke the school record for single-season hitting percentage with an impressive .355 attack. She's the Islanders returning kills leader with 200 in the spring.
- A&M-Corpus Christi made its third program appearance at the NCAA tournament (2015, 2016, 2021) in April after defeating Sam Houston in a tense five-setter for the Southland Championship and automatic bid.
- This marks Steve Greene's sixth season at the helm of the Islanders, where he holds an 81-60 overall record.
The Opponents
- In the spring, Arizona State finished 6-14 and placed ninth in the Pac-12, earning an All Pac-12 honorable mention in Iman Isanovic.
- Louisville saw a successful spring campaign that included a 12-2 mark in the ACC to claim the conference crown and advancing to the sweet sixteen at the NCAA tournament. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 13 in the AVCA poll and were picked to finish second in the ACC preseason poll.
- Cal Poly is returning to the court after a prolonged hiatus after canceling the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.
