OMAHA, Neb. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball concluded a spectacular season with a 3-0 loss to San Diego in the first round of the NCAA tournament Wednesday.
San Diego cooled the Islanders high-powered offense, holding them to 30 kills and a .179 attack percentage. The tandem of
Julia Carter and
Hannah Froeschl combined for nearly half of those with 14, tallying a team-high seven each.
The Toreros benefited from Islander miscues in the early going to build a 7-2 advantage that A&M-Corpus Christi chipped away at as a
Chloe Simon kill and San Diego attack error brought it within four. However, San Diego's offense proved too much as its 16 first-set kills helped them to a 25-13 first-set win.
A
Faith Panhans' kill put the Islanders ahead 1-0 in the second, but once again, the Toreros used its offensive power to take an 11-5 lead that they would never relinquish. San Diego slammed 16 kills for the second-straight set on its way to a 25-15 second set and 2-0 match lead.
After San Diego took a 9-5 lead in the third, the Islanders used a big kill from
Montez Uigaese and
Ella Litterell service ace to mount a comeback and come within two, 12-10. Both teams kept it close until a 5-0 San Diego outburst gave them enough separation to claim the first-round victory.
A&M-Corpus Christi finished with a 14-5 record and marked the third time the program has appeared at the NCAA tournament.
