Volleyball Poised for NCAA Tournament Wednesday

OMAHA, Neb. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball makes its third program appearance at the NCAA Tournament with a first-round clash against San Diego on Wednesday, April 14 at 11 a.m. (CT) and televised on ESPN3. 

Islander Match Notes
  • The Islanders ride a seven-match win streak heading into the program's third appearance at the NCAA Tournament, including knocking off the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the Southland Conference Tournament to earn the automatic bid.
  • This marks A&M-Corpus Christi's third appearance at the NCAA Tournament and first since back-to-back berths in 2015 & 2016. The Islanders aim to collect its first NCAA win, with head coach Steve Greene making his second trip while at the helm.
  • A&M-Corpus Christi has specialized in kills this season, as its high-powered offense ranks fifth nationally in kills per set (14.61). The squad also ranks 11th among the national leaderboard in assists per set (13.17).
  • The Islanders claimed plenty of postseason hardware, as Southland superlative awards went to Carissa Barnes for Libero of the Year and Faith Panhans for Setter of the Year. The pair also landed on the All-Southland first team list while Chloe Simon and Rachel Young picked up second team laurels.
  • Panhans' Setter of the Year nod marked the fifth time in six years the award has gone to A&M-Corpus Christi.
  • Libero Carissa Barnes was a three-time Southland Defensive Player of the Week honoree and stands 47 digs away from crossing the 1,000-dig career plateau. She also ranks among the top-10 nationally in aces per set (0.61), digs per set (5.88) and service aces (40).
  • Highlighting her impressive spring campaign, Faith Panhans registered a triple-double in four sets against UIW with 13 kills, 43 assists and 11 digs.
  • The Islanders have swept their opponents eight times this spring, including three-straight against league foes Nicholls, New Orleans and McNeese.
  • As a team, the Islanders top the Southland in several statistical categories including assists per set (13.11), hitting percentage (.291), and kills per set (14.70). Individually, Panhans (0.383), Young (0.364) and Hannah Froeschl (.357) all rank among the league's top four in hitting percentage at second, third and fourth.   
The Opponent
  • San Diego enters with an identical 12-4 overall and league record, winning 11-straight to open the spring season before dropping four of its last five contests to claim a NCAA at-large bid.
  • The Toreros landed four on All-WCC teams, as Thana Fayad, Grace Frohling and Roxie Wilbin were selected as first-team members while Katie Lukes garnered her second-straight, second-team distinction.
  • A two-time West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and first-team threat, Roxie Wilbin leads the Toreros in kills with 249 and averaging 4.22 per set.
  • The Toreros bring a balanced defense, as five different players have accumulated 100+ digs through the spring.
