Barnes Wins Sixth SLC Defensive Player of the Week Honor this Season

November 01, 2021

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Continuing to lead the nation in digs per set, junior Carissa Barnes from the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's volleyball program was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week winner.

Barnes has now won six Player of the Week awards this season and nine in her career.

"Carissa had another outstanding week on defense. She is really doing a great job of adapting to each team we play and covering the court with confidence. Her serve-receive is really consistent as well as her tough serving, which both keep us playing at a high level," said head coach Steve Greene.

The Weatherford, Texas native ranks first in the country with 6.42 digs per set. She has more than a half dig per set led over the second ranked student-athlete, Katie Forsythe from Loyola Maryland (5.79 d/s).

Barnes averaged 6.09 digs per set over three matches last week against UTRGV, Nicholls and New Orleans. She started it off with 30 digs in five sets against UTRGV and followed it up with 21 digs in three sets against Nicholls.

Barnes closed out the weekend with 16 digs in three sets against New Orleans to help the Islanders improve to 10-1 in league play.

"I'm impressed with her leadership as the season is building towards the conference tournament. She is really speaking up and leading us right now," Greene said.

Barnes and the first-place Islanders will travel Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. match at Southeastern. A&M-Corpus Christi won the first meeting 3-0 over the Lady Lions at home on Sept. 30.
