CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A celebratory Senior Day included a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) sweep for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball program over New Orleans on Saturday at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (14-9, 10-1 SLC) held a special Senior Day ceremony prior to the match to honor
Julia Carter,
Sam Dumity,
Angel Felan,
Montez Uigaese and
Rachel Young.
"Really enjoyed showcasing all of our seniors today. They've all made such a great impact for our program on and off the court," said head coach
Steve Greene.
Uigaese led the charge with a match-high 15 kills and .481 hitting percentage. Freshman
Kyndal Payne posted eight kills and a .438 clip. As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi hit for a .359 mark and limited UNO (1-18, 1-10 SLC) to a .204 percentage.
Junior
Faith Panhans was all over the floor and registered 35 assists, nine digs and seven kills. Fellow junior
Carissa Barnes, the nation's leader in digs per set, notched 16 digs. She entered the weekend with 6.44 digs per frame.
"Faith had another great match leading our offense today. She also had a great defensive match and culminated things with a big block," Greene said. "Montez was on fire offensively again. She can score in so many ways."
The Colonels were led by Trinity Jackson's double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs.
The first set was tight early and tied at 12-12. A kill by freshman
Leah Stolfus sparked a 3-0 run to make it 15-12, and after the media timeout the Islanders increased it to 18-13 on a spike by Young. UNO could never get back in the set after that as A&M-Corpus Christi ended it on a kill by freshman
Morgan Baese.
Like the first set, the second was close early until the Islanders pulled away midway through. A&M-Corpus Christi held a slight 16-15 edge when a kill by freshman
Kyndal Payne sparked a big 8-1 run to make it 24-16. The Islanders capped it with a kill by Uigaese.
The convincing third set saw A&M-Corpus Christi ahead 13-11 when it reeled off six straight points to catapult in front 19-11 on a kill by sophomore
Ella Litterell. A kill by Uigaese increased the advantage to 22-15 and a solo block by Panhans ended the match.
"I'm really proud of how our team keeps improving each match. We have big goals and aspirations, and our hard work is definitely showing," Greene said.
The Islanders improved to 10-1 all-time against the Privateers and have won 10 straight meetings.
A&M-Corpus Christi will go back on the road Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. rematch at Southeastern. The Islanders won the first meeting this year 3-0 at home.
