THIBODAUX, La. – Behind an 11 kill, 44 assist and 14 dig triple-double performance from junior setter
Faith Panhans, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi continued its Southland dominance with a 3-1 victory over Nicholls Thursday evening inside the David R. Stopher Gymnasium.
Panhans' triple double is her first of the season and second overall as an Islander.
In addition to Panhans,
Rachel Young headlined the Islanders' effort with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs.
Kyndal Payne paced the attack with a season-high 18 kills while
Carissa Barnes, the national leader in digs per set, added 20 on the night.
After dropping the first set, A&M-Corpus Christi leveled the score in the second thanks to a crucial six-point outburst capped by back-to-back service aces from Panhans that created a 15-7 cushion. After a Payne kill doubled the Islanders' lead, Nicholls countered by seizing five of the next six but two quick kills from
Ella Litterell closed out the set for the Islanders.
The Islanders battled in the third, overcoming an early 8-4 deficit and turning it into a 15-14 advantage on a Colonel error. Six ties down the stretch kept it a tight affair and sent it to extra points, where a three-point run sealed the 27-25 win and earned the Islanders a 2-1 match lead.
Both clubs' back-and-forth play continued to the fourth, seeing another six ties to start the set before a Young kill sparked a four-point run for the 12-9 lead. Nicholls countered with its own run to even it 13-all, but A&M-Corpus Christi claimed five of the final six points to wrap up the win and keep its Southland mark unblemished.
The Islanders conclude their road trip against New Orleans on Saturday, October 9 at 1 p.m.
