Islanders Open Spring Season with Two Home Matches

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team welcomes UTRGV and UTSA for a pair of matches, with the Islanders facing UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Friday, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. before taking on in-state rival UTSA Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1:30 p.m. inside the Dugan Wellness Center.

Islander Match Notes
  • The Islanders received a pair of first-place votes and amassed 238 points to land third on the Southland's preseason poll.
  • Three Islanders - Carissa Barnes, Rachel Young, and Chloe Simon - were awarded spots on the Southland's Preseason All-Conference squads, as Barnes and Young made the first team while Simon represented the Islanders with a second-team citation.
  • Barnes became the Islanders' second Freshman of the Year in program history after a fantastic rookie campaign that featured double-digit digs in 28 matches and 48 service aces that ranks fifth in the single-season record book.
  • A&M-Corpus Christi completed the 2019 season with a 19-12 record, with the total marking a 10-game improvement from the previous year. The Islanders got hot in league play, where they posted eight-straight victories and tallied 11 of their 19 wins.
  • Head coach Steve Greene begins his fifth season and owns a 67-55 overall and 46-18 league records while at the helm of the Islanders.  
  • The two matches will serve as the Islanders only non-conference competition, as they open Southland action against preseason favorite SFA on Thursday, Feb. 4.  
The Opponents
  • UTRGV ended 2019 competition with a 14-17 overall record, highlighted by a program-first upset over Big-10 opponent Maryland at the UTSA Classic. The team split the WAC schedule with an even 8-8 mark. The Islanders split the season series against UTRGV in 2019.
  • UTSA is coming off a 16-14 season in 2019 and are led by 19th-year head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff, who stands as the Roadrunners' winningest coach in program history.
