Kyohei Yamanaka has been named All-Southland Academic First Team in a release from the conference office on Monday. Senior
Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas and junior
William Mottet were each named to the second team.
Yamanaka was a first-team All-Southland conference selection at No. 6 singles. He was a perfect 3-0 in league matches and went 13-5 overall in singles. Yamanaka is a Kinesiology major from Chiba, Japan. Last spring, he earned Freshman of the Year honors and was a first team All-Southland performer at the No. 6 singles position.
William Mottet is a Business Management major at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Gargenville, France, native earned second team All-Southland Conference honors at No. 1 singles. He went 15-8 in singles play this past spring and was 4-1 in conference matches. He also compiled a 14-7 overall doubles record as a junior.
Pedrosa becomes a three-time All-Academic honoree, earning league honors as a sophomore and again as a junior last year. He went 14-4 in singles on the year and was 4-1 in Southland singles matches. He was named second-team All-Southland at No. 4 singles this past spring. The Sevilla, Spain, nativeis a Mechanical Engineering major.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each Southland Conference institution. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for All-Academic selection. Nominees who were also named to the All-Conference First Team or CoSIDA Academic All-District team are automatically named Southland All-Academic.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, votes for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees must have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
As a program, the Islanders have reached 11 NCAA Tournaments in program history and captured 25 Southland titles. The men are seeking the program's ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. The women have won three of the past four Southland Conference regular season titles.
