Key Islander Sequence
- Leading 23-19 in the first set, UTRGV went on a 4-0 run and tied the set at 23-23. After A&M-Corpus Christi called its second timeout, Simon came up with a kill off a feed from Coates to give the Islanders set point. Lyons and Young came up with a block on the next point to give the Islanders the first set, 25-23.
- The fourth set included 12 ties and three lead changes, eventually leading to an Islander point, forcing a fifth set. With the match tied at 24-24, UTRGV took the lead on a Ragni Steen Knudsen kill to force match point. But a service error tied the match back up at 25-25 and gave the Islanders the serve.
Jenna Krenek kept the ball in play and Lyons responded with a kill to make it 26-25. On set point, it was the left-handed freshman
Kylie Filipiak who made the big play, notching a kill off a feed from Green to send the match into a fifth set.
Up Next
- The Islanders will head to the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge, La., for three matches this weekend. Friday's slate includes the host Tigers at 12:30 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. contest against South Florida. On Saturday at 11 a.m., the Islanders take on Duke. The next home matches are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7 as part of a double header. Texas Southern visits the Dugan for an 11:30 a.m. match followed by a marquee matchup against the University of Miami at 5:30 p.m.
