SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's
Hannah McWilliams tied for sixth place in the pole vault at the NCAA Division I West Regional on Friday to qualify for the NCAA Championships in June. McWilliams becomes the first Islander since Kassandrea Son to qualify for an NCAA Championship meet. Son participated in the 2012 NCAA Championships in the long jump. The West Regional is being held at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.
McWilliams cleared 3.78m and 3.93m on her first attempt. After missing at 4.08m, she cleared on her second attempt. With the field becoming smaller, the senior got over at 4.08m bar (13-8.5 feet) on her first attempt. The event ended as only 12 competitors cleared the 4.18 bar, sending McWilliams to the NCAA Championship meet. The women's pole vault will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 7 in Eugene, Ore.
Diamond Thomas was in the first flight of the women's discus throw, finishing in 46th place with a best mark of 145-8 (44.40m).
On Saturday,
Zhafear Ray will compete in the men's high jump. He cleared 6-11 at the J Fred Duckett Twilight Meet and enters ranked No. 34 in the west region.
Allyson Girard will conclude the events with the 5,000 at 8:45 p.m. She has the region's 44th fastest time in the event at 16:16.61 which she ran at the Mt. Sac Relays.
