FRISCO, Texas – Sophomore
Elizabeth Khatevi of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field team added another honor to her extensive trophy case on Wednesday afternoon, as it was announced by the league office that she was named the Southland Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the voting period of April 1-7.
Khatevi shined in the 1500m at two different meets last weekend, taking home the individual victory at both amid some tough competition. She started off at the prestigious 98
th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin on Thursday, where she earned the gold medal in the A-section of the event by finishing with a time of 4:24.82. Less than 24 hours later at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, she then placed first again after crossing the line with a time of 4:17.03, which represented a more than seven-second improvement from the day before. This helped Khatevi set the new A&M-Corpus Christi program record – topping her own mark of 4:21.47 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California on April 18 of last year – as well as the new Bobcat Invitational meet record and the Texas State Track & Field Complex facility record, all in the same race. As of Wednesday, this time ranks at the top of the Southland and No. 38 in all of Division I.
"I'm excited and proud of Elizabeth for earning another SLC honor!" Islanders head coach
Bryan Jackson said. "She had a fantastic weekend winning both the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational in the 1500m, and her mark should hold up to secure her spot on the NCAA West Preliminaries."
This honor is a new one for Khatevi, as it goes down as the first weekly award during track season for her career so far. She is no stranger to similar recognitions, however, as during cross country season, she has won each of the last five Athlete of Week awards dating all the way back to October 23, 2024 during her freshman season. As far as track is concerned, Khatevi adds the accolade to a list that also includes six total conference championship gold medals, two conference championship Most Valuable Performer awards and the 2026 Indoor Athlete of the Year award that she earned last month.
The Islanders get right back into action this week, making the short trip over to Kingsville to take part in the Cactus Cup on Saturday.
