CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's William Mottet earns Southland Conference Player of the Week honors, securing the third straight honor for the Islanders. Last week, the men improved to 14-2 on the season. Mottet went 5-1 on the week across singles and doubles play, playing a key part in each of the three victories.
In Tuesday's match against UTRGV, Mottet came out strong, helping secure both the first match in No. 2 doubles (6-3) and first point in singles (6-3, 6-4) in the No. 2 slot over Yehonatan Kaufman. The Islanders earned a tight fought 4-3 victory over UTRGV, with each of his two wins being key in the outcome of the match.
Moving to the HEB Tournament of Champions, Mottet picked up both a No. 2 doubles win (7-6) and No. 2 singles win (6-3, 6-4) over Troy, helping lead the Islanders to a 4-0 victory. In the second match of Friday's doubleheader, he fell in his only loss (6-2, 7-5) of the week at the No. 2 slot to South Alabama's Clement Marzol. After falling 4-3 to the Jaguars, the Islanders advanced to face New Mexico State. Mottet moved up to the No. 1 slot, securing a huge singles win (4-6, 7-5, 6-2) over Chris Gonclaves to help the Islanders secure a 3rd-place finish with a 4-1 victory over the Aggies.
As a team, the Islanders improved to 14-2 on the season. With that, the men remain in the top 75 of the NCAA National Rankings, currently ranked #72 in the nation. Tomorrow, they travel to San Antonio for a 2 PM match against UTSA. The men look to ride the momentum from Saturday's win, with hopes of securing a victory this Wednesday over the Roadrunners!
