SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After sweeping the ACU Spring Break Multi decathlon, the remainder of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi squad continued their first week of outdoor action at the UTSA Invitational this Friday. The Islanders collected a pair of new program records over the course of the day, with
Diamond Thomas and Rabea Schoneborn collecting Islander bests in the shot put and 5000m respectively.
Schoneborn's 16:53.32 in the 5000m was good enough for first place in San Antonio, beating a field of 12 by more than 30 seconds. Her pace bests the previous Corpus Christi record by five seconds exactly, competing in her first meet since being named Southland Conference Women's Indoor Track Performer of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
Thomas tossed a 14.47m in the shot put to take fourth in the event this Friday, besting her previous PR by nearly half a meter and the Islanders' program record by .15m. The junior finished ahead of 11 other athletes, providing a better performance than five power-five competitors.
Distance runner
Cesar Gonzalez picked up the Blue and Green's other event win on the day, coming in first during the 5000m, with a time of 15:21.20. Freshman runner
Valentina Campos set a personal record with her own time of 17:53.45 in the 5000m, coming seventh overall on the day.
In all, both the Corpus Christi men and women stand third after a day of competition, with the former sitting just four points off of first place Texas Tech.
