Islanders Prepare for Mid-Week Doubleheader

The Blue and Green Competing Against Texas Southern

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Texas A&M Softball travel to Houston TX., where they will be facing off against the Lady Tigers in a doubleheader competition on March 13th. Returning from a tough Southland Series against SFA this past weekend, the Blue and Green seek to stand as the victors against TSU. The Islanders slate off their first game at 3 p.m., with the second competition beginning at 5 p.m.

PREVIOUS GAME AGAINST TEXAS SOUTHERN
While hosting a weekend tournament against Utah State, Nebraska-Omaha, and Texas Southern here Chapman Field on Feb. 25th, the Islanders fell short in their meet against the Lady Tigers 3-4. The Blue and Green knocked on the sheet early in the fourth as Kaylon Dunn, Kandace Johnson, and Whitney Wendel pulled together a 3-0 lead on TSU. Quick to respond, Texas Southern answered with 3 unearned runs from Davis, Bilbao, and Padron; Wiltz sacrified a fly to bring in Santos for an RBI, putting the Lady Tigers up 4-3. Texas Southern's pitching staff were able to successfully hold off the Islanders for the final 2 innings as Destiney Diaz, Kaylee Hoppens, and Kayla Sheridan occupied the bases.

IN THE CIRCLE
>>Junior pitcher Ashley Smith (2-7) returns from this weekends Southland Series, as she stayed on the mound for all 9 total innings and tallied a season high of 99 pitches thrown against SFA on Saturday's competition. Smith was able to keep the Ladyjacks scoreless for the first 3 innings, but were able to break through with a single run late in the fourth and again at the bottom of the ninth with 4 unearned runs. The Louisiana native finished off the game allowing only a single earned run, walking two batters, and a 1.1 ERA.

AT THE PLATE
>> Whitney Wendel notches her second homer of the season, sending a moonshot over left field for a four-run frenzy against SFA on Saturday early in the eighth inning. The Freshman Catcher finished off the weekend Southland Series with a 0.500 BA, 0.727 SLG%, and a 0.500 OB.
>> Junior outfielder Keagen Helson kept the Lady Jacks on their heels, registering a 0.500 BA on Saturday's competition.
>> Junior veterans lead the Blue and Greens offensive squad, as outfielder Kayla Sheridan holds a .337 BA and .361 slugging percentage. Infielder Kaylon Dunn possesses a .368 on-base percentage.

SCOUTING TSU
>>  While being named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Softball Players of the Week, Senior pitcher Jasmin Fulmore returns from a 4-3 victory over Nebraska-Omaha as she allowed just one earned run and sat down seven hitters. The Washington native leads the Lady Tigers pitching staff with a 2.05 ERA and 20 total strike-outs.
>> Senior infielder Jocilynn Ellis leads TSU with a .417 BA and a .517 OB%
>> Junior infileder Tello Dominique adds on to the Lady Tiger's offense, holding a .560 slugging percentage.

COMING UP NEXT
The Islanders return to the Island as they face against Southeastern Louisiana in their second Southland Series of the season, here on Chapman Field. The first competition slates off on Friday at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m. The Blue and Green will finish off the weekend series against the Lady Lions on Saturday at 12 p.m.
