Islanders Head to Lion Classic

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M Corpus Christi softball heads out to Hammond, La., this weekend to play in the three-day, five team Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University. The Islanders step on the field Friday at 5 p.m. against hosts Southeastern Louisiana before competing in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

The Blue and Green kicked off the 2018 season in San Antonio, Texas at the UTSA classic going 1-2 against Seton Hall and Southern Illinois University.  Whitney Wendel recorded her first homerun of the season, while teammate Keagen Helson marks her second tater of the year, in the Blue and Green's second matchup with Seton Hall this past Saturday.

Islander Notes
>> Junior outfielder Kayla Sheridan leads the Islanders into North Oak Park with a total of 3 runs and a 0.500 batting average
>> Freshman Taelor Thomas has already tallied three stolen bases this season, and is yet to be caught on the base paths this year
>> Alexis Tovar earned her first win as an Islander this past weekend, giving up a single hit and just one walk over three innings of work
>> Both of Helson's knocks have gone deep this season, as the transfer continues to slug a team-best .800 on the year and lead the Islanders in RBI (4)

at Southeastern Louisiana 
WHEN: Friday 5 pm
>> The Lions tied for sixth place in the 2017 Southland Conference regular season, but it would be Northwestern State to claim the final spot in the conference tournament, after winning the two's regular season series 2-1
>> Southeastern Louisiana return 18 letterwinners from last year including key players in the outfield; Kinsey Nichols (.393, 44 hits, 31 runs, 15 SB) and at shortstop; Jaquelyn Ramon (.320, 40 runs, 48 hits, 54 SB)

vs Belmont
WHEN: Saturday 11 am & Sunday 12 pm
>> Returning pitcher, Brooklin Lee, was nominated for OVC Pitcher of the Year along with being named one of the three players to watch in the conference in 2018
>> The Bruins finished the 2017 season with a 35-22 record overall while going 10-12 in the Ohio Valley Conference. 

vs Detroit
WHEN: Saturday 3 pm
>>The Titans booked a trip to the Horizon League Tournament in 2017 before falling short in the semifinals
>> Returning shortstop, Courtney Gilbert, made First Team All-Horizon League while leading the team in almost every offensive category (.548, 57 hits, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 34 RBI, 3 home runs)

vs Nebraska-Omaha
WHEN: Sunday 10 am
>> The Mavericks fell in their first game of the postseason during the Summit League Tournament. 
>>They enter the Lion Classic II after going 3-2 in the Bulldog Kickoff Classic.
