SAN MARCOS, Texas – A day after placing fifth in the hammer,
Diamond Thomas notched a pair of second-place finishes in the shot put and discus, setting the school record in the latter, as the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi track & field program capped its regular season at the Bobcat Classic on Saturday afternoon. The men came in eighth as a team with 28 points, while the women were fifth with 54.33 points for the meet.
Thomas saved her best for last on Saturday, as her final throws in the shot put and discus vaulted her up the leaderboard to second place and a total of 16 points. Already the program record holder in the hammer, the Houston native topped the best throw in program history in the discus by going 47.18 meters.
Thomas followed that up with a 13.91-meter heave in the shot put, the fourth longest in school history. The Islanders took 12 points from that event, as
Adrienne Nickleson placed fifth at 13.43 meters. Adding on to a solid performance in the shot put for the Islanders,
Ben Clark placed eighth on the men's side at 15.31 meters.
Zhafear Ray put 10 points on the board in the men's high jump with his fifth event win of the outdoor season. After passing on the first three heights, the freshman easily cleared the 1.95-meter bar and boldly chose to pass at two meters, where other opponents at already cleared. On his third jump, Ray eclipsed the 2.05-meter bar for first place. With the Southland Conference meet less than two weeks away, Ray beat competitors from Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin.
Skyler Coffman added a pair of points with a seventh-place finish in the high jump.
Per usual,
Sashane Hanson found herself on the podium at the end of the women's high jump. The Jamaican international cleared the 1.70-meter bar for third place.
Yesterday,
Logan Jorgensen tied his own school record in the men's pole vault at 4.70 meters, as he placed second in the event. It marked the third time Jorgensen had cleared that height.
Melina Ortiz placed eighth in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.40 meters.
Ebony Collins scored in both of her races. The San Antonio native took fourth in the 200-meter dash at 23.91 seconds, the third fastest time in school history, and fifth in the 100-meter dash at 11.86 seconds.
Mikayla Roell chipped in with a point in the 100m with an eighth-place finish at 12.17 seconds.
Savanna Steakley earned three points in the women's 400-meter hurdles. The rookie finished in sixth with a time of 1:04.33, the ninth quickest time in the program record books.
The Islanders will head to the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 12-14 in New Orleans.
