CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team opens up a six-game road swing on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M scheduled for 1&3 p.m. The original doubleheader was rained out on March 29.
The Blue and Green (9-30, 3-15 SLC) is coming off a 4-1 win in the series finale against Houston Baptist on Saturday.
Candice Hadd went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI in the win, while
Liz Carter struck out six in a two-hitter.
Carter was named Southland Conference pitcher of the week on Monday. The Austin native went 2-1 last week with a 0.54 ERA in 24 innings and fanned 27 batters.
Corpus Christi can even the season series with the Panthers (19-24, 11-7 SWAC) with a pair of wins on Tuesday. Prairie View took two games at Chapman Field on March 8.
In the first matchups, Carter allowed one unearned run in a three-hit performance in the home opener for the Islanders, only for Ashley Higgins to toss a one-hitter for the Panthers to win 1-0.
Lexi Shaw and
Kandace Johnson gave the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the first. Prairie View struck for three in the sixth to win 4-2.
Tuesday will be the final tune-up of the season for the Panthers before the Southwestern Conference Tournament, which starts on May 10. Offensively, Briana Knowles is batting a team-high .360, as five Panthers have averages over .300. Ashley Higgins and Taylor Drury have carried the weight in the circle this season with 37 combined starts with a record of 18-23.
