Islanders Pounced on by Panthers

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team dropped a midweek doubleheader to Prairie View on Tuesday, falling 1-0 and 4-2.

The Islanders (5-15) tallied 10 hits on the afternoon, including multi-hit games from Lacey Boyd, Aspen Auger and Savannah Sandoval, but the Blue and Green left 11 stranded on the paths.

Prairie View (3-14) relied on pitching in the late innings to ward off comeback attempts by the Islanders.

GAME 1
Liz Carter (4-8) fell victim to a tough-luck loss. The Austin native tossed a 3-hitter, while striking out seven.

The Panthers countered with Ashley Higgins throwing a one-hit shutout withfour punchouts.

Prairie View picked up the only run of the game in the first inning. Destinee Williams stole third on a double steal, only for the throw from home to sail into right field, allowing Williams to score.

Carter settled in after the run, allowing just one runner on base in the third, fourth and fifth, before retiring the side in the final two innings.

Megan Mitchell singled up the middle in the third with Lexi Shaw on first to give the Blue and Green its best scoring opportunity of the game. The Islanders could not bring in a run after Boyd moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt.

GAME 2
After struggling at the plate in the opening game, the bats went to work for the Islanders early in game two. The Blue and Green recorded four of its nine hits in the opening frame.

Kandace Johnson plated Lacey Boyd on a single up the middle, after the latter singled to open the inning.

Lexi Shaw drove in her second RBI of the campaign on a liner that was too hot for the first baseman to put Corpus Christi up 2-0.

The Panthers pulled one back in the top of the second on a home run from Laurisa Hernandez.

Islanders starting pitcher Kandace Johnson shook off the homer by surrendering just three hits in the next four innings.

Prairie View took the lead in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back-to-back singles to open the inning loaded the bases for the visitors. Alyssa Garcia doubled off the wall in center to put the Panthers up 3-2.

Amanda Ford added an insurance run before the inning came to an end with an RBI groundout.

Corpus Christi put runners on base in each of the last four innings, but only one player made it to scoring position.

Johnson scattered 10 hits and allowed four runs with five strikeouts in the loss, missing her career high by one.

Taylor Drury went the distance for the Panthers, giving up nine hits and one free pass to go along with a pair of earned runs.
