LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team finished the Ragin' Cajun Invitational on Sunday with an early doubleheader. The Islanders (5-13) dropped a pair of games to North Dakota State, 4-0, and No. 18/19 Louisiana, 18-0.
GAME 1 vs. North Dakota State
The Blue and Green could not find an answer to the pitching of Jacquelyn Sertic (5-9). The Bisons (6-13) hurler tossed a 2-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Islanders' starter
Kandace Johnson held NDSU to four hits in the loss, but fell on the wrong end of four defensive errors. The freshman gave up one earned run on the morning with a trio of punchouts.
North Dakota State opened the game with two runs in the first. Vanessa Johnson singled in Madyson Camacho, before rounding the bases on an error in the outfield.
The Bison tacked on runs in the third and fourth on a fielder's choice and a home run.
KEY INNINGS
TOP 1
>> The Bison jumped ahead with a pair of runs during Vanessa Anderson's at bat. Anderson's RBI single turned into two runs as an error in the outfield allowed the right fielder to come home.
TOP 3
>> The Bison loaded the bases with no outs on a single, walk and error. Johnson got out allowing just one run on a fielder's choice to short.
TOP 4
>> Dani Renner made it 4-0 North Dakota State with a leadoff solo shot down the left field line.
GAME 2 vs. Louisiana – Loss, 18-0
The Ragin' Cajuns (16-4) tallied 17 runs on 18 hits.
Louisiana took the lead in the first with a trio of runs, before putting 11 on the board in the third with 10 of their hits.
Liz Carter (4-7) took the loss after three innings of work, striking out four.
Kandace Johnson came on for the final two innings to strike out three and give up five runs, four earned.
In the circle for Louisiana, Alyssa Denham (6-1) picked up the win with three hitless innings and struck out four. Summer Ellyson and Victoria Brown combined to make the final six outs with four punchouts.
Haley Hayden, DJ Sanders and Daniella Chavez recorded a trio of hits for the Ragin' Cajuns with Lexie Comeaux driving in four runs.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Islanders return to the Coastal Bend for the first time all season on Wednesday. Corpus Christi faces Prairie View in the home opener doubleheader at 1&3 p.m.
