Islanders Drop Saturday Slate at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball team wrapped up the second day of the CenturyLink Classic, hosted by Texas State, on Saturday. The Islanders (0-4) dropped both decisions to Texas State and Abilene Christian.

TAKING ON TEXAS STATE
The Blue and Green opened the day against Texas State (3-1) in an 8-0 loss. Mackinzee Griebel picked up a hit in her third straight outing, as A&M-Corpus Christi recorded four base knocks on the afternoon.
 
Texas State pitcher Jodi Paige Williams (2-0) kept the Islanders off balance for the first three innings, scattering three hits with one strikeout. Quincy Charleston came on in relief to retire the final six outs.
 
In the circle for the Blue and Green, Liz Carter (0-2) struggled through the opening innings, giving up eight Bobcats runs on 10 hits. Over the final two frames, Carter found her groove, striking out three without allowing a hit.

>> The Islanders collected four hits for the third consecutive game.
>> Kandace Johnson and Aspen Auger chipped in with base knocks.
>> Alexis Richardson recorded her first career hit in the third.
>> Jade Torres made her first appearance in the Blue and Green as a pinch hitter in the fifth.
 
KEY INNINGS vs. Texas State
- Top of the first
>> After the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead, the tournament hosts loaded the bases with one out. Carter got out of the jam with an infield fly that turned into two outs when catcher Mariah Clay tagged a runner out coming home.
 
- Top of the Second
>> Texas State extended its lead on a three-run homer by Ariel Ortiz, which came after Kennedy Cline scored on a fielder's choice to shallow center field.
 
- Top of the Third
>> RBI singles from Cline and Bailee Carter grew the Bobcats' lead, before an error during Christiana McDowell's at bat brought Cline in to make the score 8-0.
 
- Bottom of the Third
>> Alexis Richardson drove a ball down the right field line for a single. She reached third when Mackinzee Griebel singled to right to put runners on the corners.2
 
- Top of the Fourth
>> Carter allowed a leadoff walk before striking out a pair of Bobcats to retire the side.


AGAINST ABILENE CHRISTIAN
In the second game, the Blue and Green managed a pair of hits against Wildcats (2-1) in a 10-0 loss. Wildcats starting pitcher Hannah Null struck out four and walked one, while Brianna Barnhill was 1-for-2 with three RBI to power the Southland Conference foes. ACU generated 10 runs on eight hits against Islanders starting pitcher Kandace Johnson (0-2). A&M-Corpus Christi committed two errors to the Wildcats' one.

>> Mackinzee Griebel picked up a hit in her fourth consecutive game.
>> The Islanders and Wildcats matched each other in runners left on base with five.

- Bottom of the Second
>> The Wildcats took control of the game with six runs on three hits in the second inning.
>> Up 1-0, Taylor Brown doubled to center to plate a pair of Wildcats.
>> ACU added a trio of runs on an error and a walk.
 
- Top of the Fourth
>> Griebel dropped a bunt down the first base line and beat out the throw. She advanced to third when Aspen Auger reached on an error. Liz Carter nearly drove in the run on a hard hit shot to the shortstop, but the throw beat the Austin native by a step.
 
- Bottom of the Fourth
>> Casey-May Huff singled up the middle to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
>> With two on and two out, Barnhill sent a home run over the wall in center to give ACU its largest lead of the game.
 
SETTING UP SUNDAY
The Islanders close out the tournament on Sunday at noon against Texas Tech.
