Louise Trigona each advanced to the second round of the ITA Texas Regionals featuring all of the division I programs in the Lone Star State.

The women highlighted a day of split action as the men competed in the UTSA Cup in San Antonio.

WOMEN AT REGIONALS

Marinal Vicens Miquel earned a big first round victory against Gabriel Tenorio of Texas Tech to open the ITA Texas Regionals Friday. Vicens Miquel rolled past Tenorio in straight sets, earning a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Vicens Miquel then faced sixth-seeded Donika Bashota from TCU. The Islander battled tough against one of the top players in the nation, but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-2 to end her run at the regionals.

Louise Trigona moved through to the second round as her opponent withdrew with an injury. The sophomore was then tasked with battling the fourth-ranked Petra Granic in the second round. Trigona was unable to pull the tough upset, falling 6-2, 6-2 to the Texas Longhorn. Â Â

In doubles play, Trigona and Vicens Miquel paired together and dropped a heartbreaking opening round tussle with UIW's top pairing. The Islanders went toe-to-toe with Kareh and Zemunik, falling in an 8-7 match and 7-2 in the tiebreak.

MEN AT UTSA CUP

Carlos Pedrosa Cuevas,
Daiki Tanabe,
Biyik Akinshemoyin and
Jonathan Christie represented the Islanders on day one of the UTSA Cup in San Antonio.

The Islanders found the going tough as Pedrosa and Tanabe dropped a 6-3 doubles decision in the morning match. The duo would fall 6-3 in the afternoon doubles. Akinshemoyin and Christie also suffered a pair of defeats, falling 7-5 in the morning and 6-4 in the afternoon.

In singles action Pedrosa dropped a tough three-set match to Alejandro Hayen. Pedrosa dropped a 7-6 first set before storming back with a 6-0 second. In a third-set super tiebreak, the Islanders was upended 10-6.

Akinshemoyin also suffered a three-set setback to Adolfo Arroyo. The Islander fell 6-2 in the first before a 7-6 victory to force the tiebreak. Akinshemoyin fell 10-6 in the tiebreaker.

Daiki Tanabe was upended in a nailbiter by Drew Brown. In straight sets, Tanabe fell 7-6, 7-6 in the opening match. Christie also fell in straight sets to round out the Islanders day in San Antonio.
