Texas Coming to Corpus Christi

Islanders to host Longhorns March 28 at Whataburger Field

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – For just the third time ever, the Texas Longhorns will visit Corpus Christi. The Islanders and Longhorns will battle on March 28 at Whataburger Field with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.

The matchup marks the first time Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas will square off in Corpus Christi since the 2011 season.

"We are beyond excited to have the opportunity to play Texas in our own city at Whataburger Field," said head coach Scott Malone. "Our players will be hyped to play one of the best baseball teams in our state in front of our home crowd. It should be a great night and as talented as the Horns are, we have matched up well against them - winning the last two matchups in Austin.  They have a new coaching staff and I am sure their kids will come to Corpus Christi with something to prove."

In each of the past two years, the Islanders have trekked to Disch-Falk Field and left with victories over the Longhorns. That includes a 5-0 shutout of Texas last season, where three Islanders pitchers combined to limit the Longhorns to just five hits while striking out 10.

The Longhorns have won each of the previous two meetings in Corpus Christi. In 2007, Texas topped the Islanders 10-6 while the Longhorns won 8-1 in the most recent trip to the Coastal Bend in 2011.

"We live in a baseball first city," said Malone, "and it makes me proud of the growth of the Islander baseball program that we are able to bring one of the most storied programs into our city to play in front of a huge crowd at Whataburger field. "
