Steve Greene Introduced as Head Volleyball Coach

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby formally introduced Steve Greene to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi community and local media as the fourth head coach in Islanders volleyball history at a press conference Thursday afternoon.

"First and foremost, I want to thank Scott Lazenby and [senior woman administrator] Mary Wallace for everything they did throughout the process," began Greene. "This is a dream come true for myself and my family.

"I also want to thank the team," continued Greene. "I got to spend some time with them during my interview and for the better part of the hour I spent with them, they were begging to get better. They had great success this year and my goal is to continue winning Southland championships and bring the program to national prominence."

Greene comes to the Island after spending the past six seasons as an assistant coach at Texas A&M. While with the Aggies he primarily worked with the setters and served as the program's recruiting coordinator. With Greene on staff, the Aggies have advanced to the NCAA Tournament every year and surpassed the 20-win plateau four times.

In each of the last four seasons Texas A&M has had a setter earn AVCA All-America honorable mention honors, and this past season Greene mentored Stephanie Aiple to SEC Player of the Year accolades.

"Our women's volleyball program has been very successful over the past few years, with this past year being the most memorable with our very first Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships," said Lazenby. "With the arrival of coach Greene, we hope to continue that success with many more Southland championships.

"We were blessed to have a very deep pool of candidates, but Steve immediately stood out with his deep recruiting ties here in Texas and his experience with beach volleyball," Lazenby continued. "He is a passionate and caring individual and represents every characteristic of the Islander Way. We are very excited to welcome Steve, along with his wife Alyson and son Darwin to the Islander family."

Prior to his stint in College Station, Greene spent two seasons at both Houston Baptist and Cal State Monterey Bay.

With the inaugural season of beach volleyball opening up next month, Greene also brings experience as both a player and coach in the sand.  He spent four years as the head coach of the Main Beach Volleyball Club from 2001-05.

The Islanders first-ever beach volleyball season is set to open March 16 as the Islanders travel to Houston Baptist for a dual match. The 2015 Southland Conference indoor champions, the Blue and Green will make its return to the Dugan Wellness Center in late August.
