LAFAYETTE, La. – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman
Cagatay Soke rebounded from a Friday quarterfinal loss with a pair of Saturday victories to win his consolation draw at the Battle on the Bayou hosted by the University of Louisiana.
Soke first upended Teeradon Tortrakul of Southern Miss in straight sets before besting Nicolas Kramer of New Orleans in straight sets as well. The Islander won 6-3, 6-3 over Tortrakul, who went 7-4 for the Golden Eagles in 2017.
Soke followed that effort with 7-6, 6-1 victory over Kramer, a Southland Conference foe. Kramer spent the 2016 between the three, four and five spots for the Privateers.
The freshman was the highlight of a tough second day at the Battle on the Bayou as Soke was the only Islander to pick up a singles victory.
After running to the semifinals of the second draw on Friday, freshman
Chad Nguyen couldn't find the same success Saturday, falling in straight sets to Jamie Fraser of Louisiana.
In doubles play, Soke and partner
Biyik Akinshemoyin were upended in the quarterfinals by the pairing of Dolan and Kramarov from Louisiana. The Islander duo fell 6-4 to the Ragin' Cajuns who went on to win the doubles title.
The Islanders will return to action next week with the ITF Houston Pro Futures beginning Monday and the UTSA Invitational getting underway Friday.
